Recent Updates: case settlement for nursing mother and other news
May 31, 2024
Since the end of legislative session nearly two weeks ago, we have been busy with two major case developments, gearing up for summer events, and more! Check out what’s new in this wrap of all things Gender Justice:
Historic Legal Victory for MN Abortion Access
This week, the Minnesota Supreme Court denied an anti-abortion activist group’s request to intervene in the historic abortion rights lawsuit known as Doe v. Minnesota, affirming lower court rulings denying their effort to relitigate the case. The ruling from the Minnesota Supreme Court concludes the legal challenge, ensuring the restrictions struck down by a district court in July 2022 will remain permanently blocked.
This victory has been five years in the making, and we are grateful to our partners and supporters for making it possible!
Settlement Reached in Ali v. Sun Country
A settlement has been reached in the lawsuit known as Ali v. Sun Country Airlines, in which the plaintiff Hani Ali, a nursing mother and former employee of Sun Country Airlines alleged that the employer failed to provide her with appropriate space to pump and store milk, and subjected her to discriminatory treatment that forced her out of work.
The Parties have resolved the case in a manner that is satisfactory to both parties. The Parties are proud to say that Sun Country has committed to implement nursing mother accommodations beyond those required under federal and state law, including a new lactation space.
Minnesota Lynx Support Gender Justice!
This year’s 2024 WNBA Commissioner’s Cup, an in-season competition, serves as a vehicle for the WNBA to highlight civic engagement efforts, with an emphasis on the impact of voting on reproductive health within communities of color and the LGBTQ+ community.
Through Commissioner’s Cup play, each team accumulates donation dollars that will be presented to their charitable organization at the conclusion of the Commissioner’s Cup Championship, and the Minnesota Lynx chose to support Gender Justice! Gender Justice will be highlighted at the Sunday, June 2 and Sunday, June 9 Lynx games, and we’d love to see you there!
Pro-Choice Minnesota: Dunk on Dobbs Event
On June 24, 2022 the landmark Dobbs v. Jackson Supreme Court decision sent shockwaves through the reproductive justice movement when Roe v. Wade was overturned, stripping away the legal right to an abortion for millions of Americans. It’s more important now than ever before to build community and fight against these restrictive bans. That’s why Pro-Choice Minnesota is gathering reproductive freedom activists and allies at A Bar of Their Own, the Twin Cities’ first sports bar dedicated to broadcasting and highlighting women’s sports, for a night of resistance while celebrating the progress we have made here in Minnesota to protect reproductive freedom.
