Recent Updates: SCOTUS decision on emergency abortion care, Gender Justice team at the White House, and other news

July 1, 2024

Gender Justice is hard at work this summer, and there’s a lot happening! Catch up on what’s new:

SCOTUS Decision on Emergency Abortion Care

On June 27, months after lifting a District Court ruling that would have ensured pregnant people in Idaho could get the emergency care they need, the U.S. Supreme Court changed its mind and decided not to make a determination on the merits of the “EMTALA” (Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act) case.

This ruling exacerbates a public health crisis, placing the health and well-being of countless Americans at risk. By punting on what should be a straight-forward ruling, the Supreme Court effectively condones the denial of emergency abortion care, sending a dangerous message that pregnant individuals’ lives are expendable in the face of extreme anti-abortion legislation.

Listen to our latest SCOTUS Chat to get the details on the ruling, and its implications.

Gender Justice Team at the White House

Last week, Gender Justice leadership joined other LGBTQ leaders from around the country at the White House.

While we’re absolutely proud and honored to have been invited to the 2024 Pride Month Celebration on the South Lawn, and it’s invigorating to connect with so many people doing this work at a critical time in history, we also could not remain silent.

As ACT-UP’s iconic campaign reminds us, SILENCE=DEATH. They’ve updated the campaign to meet the moment. For more information and to buy a button, check the link below. Proceeds go directly towards medical aid to Palestinian people fleeing Gaza.

2024 Super Lawyer Award

Christina Sambor, North Dakota State Director at Gender Justice, was selected to Super Lawyers for 2024!

Being selected to Super Lawyers is limited to a small number of attorneys in each state. As one of the few attorneys to garner the distinction of Super Lawyers, Christina has earned the respect of peers as one of the top-rated attorneys in the nation. Gender Justice is incredibly fortunate to have Christina in our fight to advance gender equity in North Dakota.

Congratulations, Christina!

Thank You for Your Support!

The election is right around the corner. In a political climate increasingly influenced by extreme right-wing ideology, Gender Justice Action (Gender Justice’s sister organization focused on advocacy and political organizing) is committed to pushing back and mobilizing the majority who support gender equity.

Thank you so much for stepping up to raise more than $10,000 in the last few days before the end of Gender Justice Action’s fiscal year, putting us in a strong position to elect gender equity champions this fall.
