Saint Paul, Minn.—

Today, the Minnesota House voted against HF 12, a bill that directly violates Minnesota law by targeting transgender girls and barring them from participating in school sports. This legislation did nothing to address real issues Minnesotans are facing—instead, it singled out a small group of kids for political gain.

Megan Peterson, executive director at Gender Justice, issued the following statement:

“This bill never should have been introduced, let alone debated. It was never about fairness in sports—it was political theater, with transgender youth paying the price. Every time lawmakers choose to fixate on trans people and spread dangerous misinformation instead of governing, they fuel an environment of fear and harassment.

We want to thank the lawmakers who stood up for trans youth and rejected this harmful legislation. Minnesotans deserve leaders who focus on real issues, not those that waste time on legislation that was destined to fail. Trans kids belong, and we will continue fighting to ensure they are protected and supported in every aspect of life.”
