A new statewide poll conducted between January 23-27, 2025, confirms that Minnesotans overwhelmingly support the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) and want lawmakers to act. Two-thirds of voters polled (67%) support adding an inclusive ERA to the state constitution.
The poll was commissioned by Gender Justice, OutFront Minnesota, and Jewish Community Action—members of Minnesotans for Equal Rights, a coalition working to ensure that Minnesotans have the opportunity to vote for equality on the 2026 ballot.
“This poll makes it crystal clear: Minnesotans want the ERA on the ballot,” said Megan Peterson, executive director of Gender Justice. “As attacks on civil rights and DEI escalate across the country, Minnesotans are doubling down on their support for equality. After last year’s unprecedented filibuster blocked ERA’s passage, lawmakers have a fresh opportunity this session to listen to the people and finish the job.”
The poll also signals that inaction carries political risks. Nearly half of respondents (49%) indicated they would be less likely to support a legislator who fails to put the ERA on the ballot.
“Now more than ever, Minnesotans are paying attention and they expect action,” said Kat Rohn, executive director of OutFront Minnesota. “An Equal Rights Amendment is a clear and actionable tool to protect all Minnesotans. These results make clear: Minnesotans are ready to cast a vote for equality and they expect the same from our elected leaders.”
The 2024 legislative session saw the ERA come closer than ever to passing, only to be stalled by a week-long GOP filibuster in the Senate. As the Trump administration rolls back civil rights, attacks LGBTQ+ rights and diversity initiatives, Minnesotans are making it clear they want their state to stand firm for equality. This poll shows voters are paying attention—and they expect lawmakers to act.
“With attacks on equal rights escalating across the country—from the Trump administration dismantling DEI programs to targeting trans people and immigrants—Minnesota has the opportunity to be a national leader,” Beth Gendler, executive director at Jewish Community Action. “We can’t take our rights for granted. The momentum is here, and lawmakers need to act now to put the ERA on the ballot and let the people decide.”
